I wouldn't worry about retained little pieces here and there, they usually come off on their own but if it's completely enveloping his neck try a warm wet washcloth or paper towel. Wrap it around the affected area and as he naturally glides through your hand the wet cloth should help it come off... And if he's a youngster try to get him used to you touching his head, it will help prevent painful bites as an adult
