When I begin to handle a new snake, I usually just quickly take them out and plop them on the ground in front of me and let them explore while I am next to them. After doing that for about a week, I start picking them up and holding them intermittently while they are slithering on the ground. Then after a few days of that they stop caring about being picked up.
Limit handling sessions to 10 minutes while your snake gets used to you.

Usually when they are younger they are very squeamish and tend to move very fast. The burrowing in the aspen has nothing to do with her temperament I would think. What kind of hides does she have?
