Eyelids are not a function of whether a creature sleeps or not. They have a specialized scale over their eyes that works to protect their eyes, though it cannot close like our eyelids do. They do sleep.

    Re: do snakes sleep?

They definitely sleep. I actually walked up to a Speckled Kingsnake one day a number of years ago. that was asleep. My intent was to catch it and take some pictures. I was amazed that I could get to within three feet of the snake without it moving. I then thought it may be dead. I waved my hand in front of it's eyes, about 3 inches away, and nothing. Let me tell you, once I grabbed it, a completely different snake was in front of me. It calmed down a bit after I had it for a few minutes.

As others have stated, I have had this same situation occur with some of my Ball Pythons. I think the no eyelids works great, because you can't tell if they are sleeping or not, which may help to protect a sleeping snake in the wild.

    Re: do snakes sleep?

I had to wake mine up last week to feed it, nudged him gently with the pinky and when that didn't work, waved it in front of his head while having it rustling the leaf in front of him. I didn't want to startle him so I had to be nice about it.

He woke up quick when he saw there was some din-din in front of him!

Oh yes, I cleaned out his tank the other day, and he was nestled in his log. It took him a good 2-3 minutes before he got going enough for Nick to pick him up and me clean the tank

So, if they sleep do they dream?

And if they dream, what of?
