Converted...
When originally diving into the snake hobby I was back and forth between corn snakes and the ball python. I went with the corn snake because the care was simple and the girth of the ball python was a little intimidating. lol....
Now that I have owned my BP for only two weeks im already thninking about which of my corn snakes will be replaced. I stil like the corns but I love how I can take my BP out and he'll just chill where i put him or hang out on my arm instead of darting off. And now I like the heavy bodiedness of them and they seem a little more exotic.
Figured I'd see who else may have gone through the same change.?

Re: Converted...
I used to be into frogs and amphibians, never really into snakes and lizards. Then one day at some mom&pop pet store one of the employees had a baby ball out. I was facinated, and had to hold it as soon as I saw it. After that day I found out when the next expo was, and came home with my normal female a week later. And then a patel the next month lol. But they really are wonderful animals, and opened me up to a whole new world of new animals like them too. I love balls the same reason you do, I like being able to handle and hang out with my pets and these guys are just so laid back. They also happen to be beautiful living works of art too, how could you go wrong?

Re: Converted...
Out of the choices offered, I chose "I began with BPs and now own both" but of course it really is more complex than that.
I began with snakes because I grew up in the country and would occasionally find & capture one. I would "keep" them anywhere between 5 minutes to a few weeks, then release them. I'm not quite sure what was going on in my head as far as keeping them a week or 2 then releasing them... it doesn't make sense now. I did provide them food and water during that time of course.
Fast forward several years...while I was in college I volunteered at a local zoo. One of the things I loved doing was taking out "contact animals" that we could walk around the zoo with to allow people to get up close & personal with some animals. One of those was ball pythons. I fell in love with BPs then, but never owned one myself.
Fast forward several more years...one day I was in a pet shop with my then boyfriend now husband, saw a BP, half jokingly asked him if we could get one, totally expecting to be told "no", but he said sure! So about one month & lots of research later, we got our first BP.
During that month, we also considered other species of snakes. My 11 year old daughter fell in love with corns. So it wasn't too much later that we got her a corn.
We now own several of both species, and I love both species (and have several more on my "must have one someday" list). I don't see my interest in either species dying out anytime soon.

Re: Converted...
My first snake was a corn. It died some years ago, and right now my only snake is a ball python.

Re: Converted...
I am really thinking about getting a pair of corns in August or September. I just love their colors!! Its either a pinstripe BP or a couple of corns.

Re: Converted...
Ok here's my deal.. I started off not liking Corns. But now I'm seeing some of the corn stuff in person and am just blown away. I think once I get my Ball collection where I want it I'll pick up some corns or kings and some cresties to work with. So I'm the stark opposite of everyone else so far.
When you've got 10,000 people trying to do the same thing, why would you want to be number 10,001? ~ Mark Cuban "for the discerning collector"

Re: Converted...
I never gave corns much thought before until a few months ago when a lonely cold amel showed up in my sister's garage and she called me frantic about how to help it. I set up a tank and she brought it over. They decided to adopt the little thing, but I agreed to allow that only after I had cared for it through a few feedings and a shed. I even took it to the vet for a checkup and to have it sexed.
When it came time for them to take her into their home, I was a little sad. They are taking excellent care of her and love her to death, especially surprising since they all thought I was weird when I got my BP She's grown so much and is a really beautiful snake with striking colors and is very pleasant to handle. I can honestly say that a nice little corn is probably in my future someday
