As for separation, it is possible for them to live together happily and healthy. there is no doubt about that. It has be done and it will continue to be done. is it recommended, no. But this is strictly because the risks usually out way any benefits if any. now rather then lecture you on this because you seem to be upset right now ill say that there is a HUGE amount of correct information located on this site. and im 100% sure your self being a smart girls, can figure out what you need to do. you will find in the information the pros and cons of the setup you have and what is a must change situation for your self to give better care. im sure you care about them so you'll figure out quickly the optimal way to go about things. i can tell you though. separating them will make it very much easier to feed and such. and if sickness develops you wont have 2 vet bills rather then 1.
if you upgrade there heating and switch them to tubs, i know its not right for me to suggest this per-say but a snake in a tub enclosure is VERY easy to conceal. and you could maybe bring them with you. not only that but tubs are the cats meow for care. they are so easy to maintain a caveman could do it.
