QT quest? Boas and Pythons same area?

so i have the new pair of solomon island ground boas (that name is too long and from here on out im going to call them SIB like hyperjoe) and im planning on getting some pythons this weekend. the SIBs are in QT in the garage (its florida, its not too cold in there and they of course have a heater and a t-stat) and i was planning on QTing the pythons in the garage too. my wife doesn't really want snakes all over the house so im dealing with that.

now the SIBs were captive born and im not worred too much about IBD with them but the possiblity is always there. so im wondering if i should QT the pythons in the garage too.

so is it okay to QT them in the same area?

If you are sure that they are cb and that they do not have IBD, then I don't see a problem with it. Just my opinion.

If you are sure that they are cb and that they do not have IBD, then I don't see a problem with it.

I did not realize there was a link between IBD and being captive born or not. Is there?

I thought one of the scariest things about IBD is that boas can be carriers of it and not display symptoms, so a boa breeder could have it in their collection and never know. In that case, I would think it would be possible to get a captive bred boa from a reputable source, and still have it turn out to carry IBD.

I'll admit I haven't really researched this or paid a whole lot of attention to it since I don't have any boas nor plans to get one any time soon.

Does anyone know more about this?

I would avoid it just simply because I am ignorant on the subject and would not want to have any possible problems. Remember this advice was given out of ignorance as I have never even researched boas much less studied this fact.

I realize this is an old thread, but I thought it was in interesting question so here I am replying.

An important aspect of quarantine that is often over looked is the order in which you work with your snakes. Always work from "clean" to "dirty" and shower before going back to "clean." Generally the established collection is considered "clean" and the snakes in quarantine are "dirty." So you always feed, water, cage wash, etc the "clean" group before working with the "dirty" group. After you've done your chores for the "dirty" group, don't handle the clean group or any equipment associated with them until you've showered and changed clothes.

In your case where you have two groups of snakes in quarantine, you have "python dirty" and "boa dirty." Because the boas could potentially carry IBD without any signs, I would consider them "dirtier" than the "dirty pythons." So the safest thing to do would be have separate dedicated equipment for the two groups and work with the pythons before the boas. It doesn't matter if they are in the same or different rooms (or garages) if you follow these precautions. Hope that makes sense!

I may have overlooked this at some point, but isn't there an IBD test that herp vets can perform to see if a boa is a carrier? Or, is that something that can only be determined by a necropsy?
