    Converting 60hz to 50hz!

    Hey guys,

I have a Herpstat Pro which only works at 60hz and 110V. When I move to Holland, I won't be able to use it unless I have a transformer and/or converter. The 110V to 220V will probably not be that much of an issue (right?) since there are many transformers that can do this.

However, I think I might run into problems with the frequency. I believe the frequency in Holland is 50hz, and Dion (spyder robotics) says that it probably won't work there.

I'd hate to give up this great 'stat, so are any of you familiar with frequency converters? Is it even possible to safely convert these different frequencies?

I'd really appreciate some help, but please keep it simple because I don't know cow dung about any of this stuff.

    Thanks,
    MH

I know of kits sold for PC's (laptop's) for the road warriors out there. Not sure if something like that might help out, but worth a shot looking into. You never know.

I am not familiar with converter - sorry.

Hes right, it wont work there. ..well it will for a little bit then burn up.
And they do sell sine wave converters but ive heard there all pretty big and very expensive.

You couldnt feesibly mod the unit itselfs, If you looked around for converters to plug it into though, you may be able to do that on the mid range priced side of things.

it may end up being cheaper to just purchase a new one for your area, ebay that one or sell it on here

    Re: Converting 60hz to 50hz!

I believe there is relation between frequency and voltage... so if you have 220V you should not be worried about frequency (it's 50Hz) and for 110V it's 60Hz... However I have some devices from US and they all working with adapter well

note: electricity here is the same as in Holland

there is no relation between voltage and frequency. The U.S. uses 60 Hz while Europe uses 50 hz, and the military uses something like 70 Hz IIRC. Europe actually has the right idea. 60hz is the frequency that makes muscles contract, so that when you are getting electrocuted you hold on. Whereas 50Hz makes your muscles expand, throwing you away from the short.

yea... silly me... that relation is not Volt/Herz but Herz/Frame rate of TV signal!

Wow, i learn something new every day. I'll keep that in mind next time i decide to try electrical work :-D

    Re: Converting 60hz to 50hz!

You'd be wasting energy with a frequency converter.

Google turns up a bunch of UK analog proportional thermostats, here's one
    http://www.888reptiles.co.uk/product...CategoryID=205

Looking at them, I'd try to talk Dion into building a 50hz custom herpstat.
