if the tank is too big he might not feel secure, ball pythons spend most of their time in burrows underground, bigger enclosures might be more stressful be sure to have hides on both sides

Yes I know and agree! I will have 3 hides( two rbi x-large hides cause the larges are to small and I ceramic rock hide) and plenty of clutter(plastic plants and such) so that he does feel secure.
