glass tank temp / humidity questions

so I'm running a 50g glass tank with a UTH (desert large) and a 75W heat lamp... I have a towel covering the screen lid to hold heat and humidity in... I am a bit short on thermometers and hygrometers but I do have a combo one about 6" above the substrate on the warm side... I have it reading a pretty consistent 90 degrees (+-2)... George hasn't been using his warm hide though, so I'm guessing that inside the hide is too warm (unfortunately I have no way of measuring temp in there till I get a IR therm or other meters)... I have a lamp dimmer that I am going to use to dial down the UTH to see if I can get him to go in there... If I do it until the Thermometer I do have says about 86 should I be good inside my hide?

    Now for humidity:

Humidity has been a pain and I have been having to mist a lot (especially because of the heat lamp... I read on here about making a humid hide so I picked up some moss and am going to put it in the hide (with the lower temp)... While doing this do I need to worry about ambient humidity also? Should my water dish be enough or am I still going to have to mist? I am treating George right now for some scale rot but i seem to have caught it early so I just want to be careful and get this right...
