It finally happened, we had our first snake escape. It was Dax, our adult male BP, who decided to go world exploring. He has been in a new tank for a couple of months now and apparently figured out a way to slide the screen top open.
I went into the room for something else and did my matter of fact visual check on all of the snakes that I automatically do every time I step into the room. I didn't see Dax immediately, so I looked in the other hide, nothing. I yanked open the closed screen lid and pulled out both hides and the water dish. Empty.
I started looking under things, nothing. Finally I started very carefully moving things out of the room. Then I looked under all shelves. Still nothing. I didn't think he would have been able to get out of the room, and I was just standing there thinking, when he dropped down from a corner of the room and headed under the nearest shelf. I ran over, picked him up, checked him for injury, and put him in a nearby locking tub.
I was mostly concerned about the possibility of one of our cats or dogs finding him before I did.
He is fine, and his top is now secured with velcro straps. After all of that I put him in his newly secured home and he went right into his warm hide for a nap, he tired himself out.
Once was enough, I will be very happy if that is our only escape.
