For years and years I've bred rats with no problems at all, but never ever been able to get mice to do ANYTHING!
But in the past 6 months, I have finally figured it out, and I'm overrun with mice!!!
I use a 20g long with 1.7-9 mice at a time, and it just seems to work wonders! I keep all my feeders in a separate room that stays dark all the time, and I only come in once a day to check on everyone, feed, and water. If I need to add a strange mouse to the group, for whatever reason, I put them all in a small critter keeper while changing the cage, so that they're running all over each other crazily, without noticing the strange one, and by the time they all end up in the clean cage, they all smell the same. At least that's my theory! I've been just holding back females once in a while when needed, and soon I'll be starting a second colony, using Frankykeno's bins, (which are working awesome for my rats!), though with smaller wire to accommodate little mice.
And without further blabbering:
And just for fun:
Stubby rat (She's missing part of her tail, dunno why.) with her new litter:
Rat pups are just the cutest:
Daddy rat in his bachelor pad, he'll be getting a friend soon:
