I bought a Spider Orchid last week and i ended up having to repot it. Long story short as I was removing it from the pot a small white ball a little bigger than a dime fell out from the side of the soil.
once I repotted the orchid I took a closer look at the little ball and saw that it was infact an egg. Shaped very simular to a chicken egg. The texture of the egg is bumpy and looks to be porus. At first I thought it was a "puff ball" mushroom bud but once I held it I could clearly see it wasn't.
The history of the Orchid:
I bought it from a nice man I know in Garden Grove, CA. He has some of his more expencive and rare orchids imported from other places around the world. This orchid happend to come from Vietnam, spent 1 week with him, and ended up with me.
I'm very fimular with the lizards of CA and what there eggs look like but this one baffels me. I will try and get photos of it later.
It has a window on the side of the egg and when I candled it, it seems to be alive with some vains showing and a nice pink glow. I let it sit for a while befor I put in in the inc. and when I placed it in the inc it was dinted but I just checked on it and the dent is gone.![]()
I have it at 87 degreese with 60% humidity at the moment. the substrait is what I found it in. Orchid bark, green moss and potting soil, damp but not dripping when squeezed. so far it looks healthier than when I found it.
I guess only time will tell if it lives or not, and what that something might be.
I dont think this egg is imported...They check for things like that when imported to CA so hopefully it will be something neat but local to the US. I'm thinking an Anole or House lizard.
Keepping my fingers crossed.
