Ok I'm some what computer stupid when it comes to the technology they come with these days, so i need some help.

I am planning on buying a laptop and most of them come with wireless built in. For this to work do I still need a wireless internet provider or can I connect without one? This stuff really confuses me. Please help with any info you could provide me about laptops.

It will mostly be used for staying connected to family, games and minor office work.
