El Laberinto del Fauno
AKA Pan's Labyrinth. I'm kinda obsessed with this movie now, as an explaination of the icon, so I thought I'd post my lil review of it over here for folks too ifn ya don't mind. Here's the official website for trailers and stuff. http://www.panslabyrinth.com/
Spoiler free, no worries.
Also, we finally saw Pan's Labyrinth! And... wow. Just wow. Brilliant. She and I both love foreign film, and prefer subtitles to dubbing, so it was lovely to get to see a subtitled movie in theatres for a change, especially one this absolutely gorgeous.
I concur with what others on Livejournal have said about the violence. In essence "Bwah, he's a bad guy, we get it, unnecessary!" but man... still, wow. del Toro didn't pull any punches, the movie is brutal, and he made his point loud and clear. And using a fairy tale to say basically the opposite of what so many fairy tales were designed to say? Genius. And in a way more true to the dark adult geared original nature of Fairy Tales, before they were Disneyfied. The surreal fantasy and terrible reality of Ofelia's world was seamless and just wow. At the end, Karen and I both teared up. I'm glad we caught it while it was still in theaters. I was so worried that all of the hype would ruin it for me as I've been waiting for months to see it and I'd be disappointed, but no, the attention is well deserved. I hope El Laberinto del Fauno cleans up at the Oscars.
For folks expecting to go in and see a fantasy movie, you're in for a shock. It's more a Military-Drama/Fantasy-Horror and it IS rated R for a reason. As someone else on LJ said, I don't think I've ever seen a movie before that's made me go through pretty much every emotion... That was exactly Karen and my experience. You feel... everything... at one point or another. It's hard to watch at times, but hard to look away too. It's amazing and mesmerizing. And it'll be a long painful wait for it to come out on DVD.
