I had to do an essay in school, and I wanted to do one on our pal, Steve!

Tell me what you think.

Stephen Robert Irwin was born on February 22, 1962 in a suburb of Melbourne, Australia. He grew up around reptiles and other animals because of his parents’ love for animals. Steve helped out at his parents’ Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park by feeding the animals and maintenance duty. On his sixth birthday, Steve received his very own snake, a 12 foot Amethistine Python. By age nine, the young boy started to handle crocodiles, after his father taught him more about reptiles. As the days went by, Steve became a crocodile trapper and caught crocodiles to send to the Reptile Park.
Steve finally had possesion of the Reptle and Fauna Park when 1991 rolled around. In 1992, he changed the name of the park to the (now famous) Australia Zoo. Steve met his future wife, Terri Raines, at a demonstration at his Zoo. Their honeymoon was taped, thus the first episode of “The Crocodile Hunter” was created. The show became very popular in the United States and United Kingdom. By 1999, his show was being watched by two hundred million people. His trademark khaki outfit and his catchphrase “Crikey!” became known throughout the world.
Steve Irwin wanted people to see the beauty in animals, especially the unloved ones. His show focused on snakes, crocodiles, lizards and other unpopular animals. He showed many people that snakes and other reptiles aren’t a bad thing, including me. He is the reason I got into snake keeping. He sacrificed a lot for our education of animals, although one day he made the ultimate sacrifice.
Steve Irwin died September 4, 2006. He was shooting an underwater documentary and got too close to an animal. A stingray that felt threatened spiked up its barb and stabbed him in the heart. Steve had time only to remove it, after that, he died instantly. He left two children who wanted to be just like him. Although Steve is gone, his spirit will be with us forever.

Rest in Peace Stephen Robert Irwin

1962-2006
