Leaving the house now to purchase the container. This is probably silly, but could I clear out the tank and set the container partly on top of the heat spot to avoid purchasing another uth? Just move the thermostat probe to the very bottom of the 6qt under substrate?

It could work there is no guarantee depends on the pad thickness of the glass, thickness of the tub, substrate etc. All you can do is try and see.
