Drooling?
Hello!
I've had a ball for about four years, but I haven't had much trouble with him, so I'm a little confused.
So, recently I was checking on my four year old male bp. He was slithering around and I looked down and noticed a fair amount of clear liquid (perhaps about a teaspoon's worth) on the area where he had been peeking over the edge of the bed.
He had a shed last night. His last meal was about two weeks ago, but he began to go into shed almost immediately afterwords and he takes a while to shed so I wasn't concerned.
He hasn't been wheezing, breathing heavily, or opening his mouth. He hasn't been overly lethargic aside from hiding while he was in shed, and now that he's shed he's been his usual obnoxiously curious self. The saliva wasn't bubbly and I did check his mouth and teeth. I didn't see any redness or swelling.
His temps have been around 77-78 pretty consistently, but he has been hiding for those few weeks.
I did increase the humidity in his tank because I noticed he was shedding. I can't remember exactly, but it was around 80-90%,
That was early yesterday. Normally it has hovered around the 60-70% range pretty consistently. Humidity in general here has been /really/ high (I know it's atmospheric humidity rather than the humidity in his tank, but I imagine it can't help).
I cleaned out all his substrate, replaced it with newspaper (which he was very excited about), and am trying to increase the heat a little.
I removed all his decor except the log he uses for sunning, but I rinsed that off. I also took out his water dish and plan to disinfect it in a moment.
I was concerned it may be mouth rot. He did bite someone about a month ago and try pried him off. (I'd been on a trip and they were keeping an eye on him and try grabbed him to bring him to see me when I got back.) I had hoped he hadn't been injured, and he appeared all right, but now I'm worried he may have broken a tooth or hurt himself.
I'd take him to a vet, but the nearest one that specializes in reptiles is over an hour away and it's the weekend.
However, if it's absolutely essential I take him in, I'd like to find out asap. I'm moving back to school next week and I don't really think my mother will want to treat him or spend money to take him to the vet.
As you can tell, I'm deathly worried, and I write way too much when I'm worried. :x
Posting the questionnaire in case that'll help.
1. How long have you had your ball python? 4 years this upcoming November.
2. How old (or how big) is your snake? I'm not sure exactly, but he was a larger hatchling when I got him. He's about 3 feet.
3. Does it eat on a regular schedule? Yep. About every 2 weeks.
4. How long since its last meal? 2 weeks.
5. What type/size prey is being offered? pre-killed small rats
6. How often do you offer food? I'm not sure what this means? I give him food every two weeks and he eats it.
7. What type and size of enclosure does it live in? Glass aquarium, roughly about 45 gallons.
8. What are you using as substrate? If it has depth, how deep is it? I was using bark chips (not cedar or pine, but I don't recall exactly what type of wood) and it was about 2-3 inches deep.
9. What type of heating do you use? I've just been using a reptile basking light positioned over part of his tank.
10. Do you use a thermostat to control temperatures? Yep.
11. What do you use to measure/monitor temperatures? He broke the in-tank ones (he wanted to climb on them) so I have been using a small electric one with a sensor.
12. What are the surface and ambient temperatures in the enclosure? Again, I'm not entirely familiar with the terminology, but I know his basking spot tends to run about 83-84 and the rest of the tank tends to run about 77-78.
13. What is the average humidity level? 60%
14. How many and what type of hides does the snake have? He has a single half pine log hide.
15. Is water readily available at all times? Yes.
16. Does the snake live alone or does it share the enclosure with anything else? He lives alone.
17. How often and for how long is the snake typically handled? During the school year he is only handled when being fed. During breaks (when he's not in shed or digesting a meal) he's handled a few times a week. I have him out for about half an hour to an hour at a time.
18. Does the snake have any medical history (old injuries or illnesses)? He had a very mild case of scale rot about three years ago. I had tried to add a water fountain to his tank. The vet gave me some stuff to put on him (bentadine, I think?) and it cleared up when he shed.
19. Do you have any other reptiles? Have you brought in any new reptiles recently? No and no.
20. Is there anything specific or unique about your situation that we should be aware of? Nothing that I haven't mentioned above.
