Last night as I fed Clyde, I ran into some events I've never had before. First, I ended up having to get two hoppers because the rats I usually feed him were not in town due to the snowstorm. They also did not have appropriate sized adult mice. . . So hoppers it was. Once I got home and got Clyde ready to eat by scenting his cage, I'm ready to go. I put the first hopper in with my BP and he's on it in seconds. He was already out and looking for it before I even put the hopper in his tank. So he hits and wraps with no issues. Good hold, by the neck so the hopper can't bite. He has the feet wrapped as well so no issue with scratching my BP either. Then, Clyde does something I've never seen. . . First he doesn't even start eating for about 20 minutes!?! Once he does start to eat the hopper, he first goes at it mid section first. After about five minutes of this, he then tries to go at it tail first. Realizing this is wrong too, Clyde leaves it alone for another 15 minutes. I'm starting to wonder if he is gonna eat it and do I need to take the hopper out? Then he finally goes at it head first and finishes with no issues. I give him about five more minutes once he's done to get situated for the second one. I put the second hopper in there and Clyde is all about it. He's tracking him all over the cage and is in his strike pose the whole time. Then, the damned hopper is going frantic trying to get out and accidentally lands on Clyde while trying to jump up the side of the tank. Clyde jerks back, goes into defensive posture and seems uninterested. I give it two or three minutes then decide to take the hopper out. Clyde then comes out and back into strike position agian. After a couple minutes of tracking the hopper, the hopper falls on my BP again. This time, I could tell he was having no part of it. On top of it all, somehow the hopper has broken his leg while in the tank and I'm not sure he will make it to Weds for the next feeding. . . . Not really an issue but I don't want to just let him die like that but I also don't want to drive into town since we are suppose to get snow again. . . .
