As for dogs, their breed/s is very relevant when it comes to trusting them around smaller pets. My dog is a 47lb herding mix of some sort (best guess Cattle Dog or Kelpie x Husky or GSD?), so all he wants to do is put them in a corner. The few times I've had escapee feeder rodents, all I had to do was let Rudy act out his herding instincts... he'll alert me once they're found, and stand watch without even trying to attack/kill. He used to try herding my cats too, but they cured him of that with a few swats to the nose! I guess that's where the old saying - as difficult as herding cats - comes from, huh?
Kind of jealous right now, if I were to have an escaped feeder there would be a bloodbath. My neighbors call them The Scottish Terrorists. I love my pups, but I have never ever seen dogs with such high prey drive as my two little idiots.
