Actually your information was great up until the point where you recommend putting the thermostat. I don't mean to come across as mean, but you shouldn't recommend where to put it unless you yourself know where. From what you said, I can tell that you don't. You don't want to put the thermostat inside of the tank because no matter what you do with the probe, a snake can still knock it loose or move it to where that probe isn't registering the heat and it kicks on fully and you end up with a bad situation. This is how mis information gets spread around and people end up spreading that bad advice then the snakes suffer.
You want your thermostat outside of the tank. That way the snake doesn't have access to it. If you need help, just ask.
