    Camera question (again..)

So this christmas, my mum said she wants to get me a nice camera . Yay !

Anybody have any advice? I don't want her to spend $350 - 400+, but a nice camera that will be perfect for capturing color and close-ups.

I know it takes a skilled photographer who is comfortable with their camera, and one who has a good understanding of the way they work, but I think part of good photography is having a good camera . Anybody care to push me in the right direction? Perhaps links, names for me to google, and reviews?
