As my day job I work at a full service boat yard/brokerage in a smaller island town. The boat yard is open M-F, but the fuel dock they maintain is open 7 days a week, so I'm usually the only one here on weekends. This time of year it's not the most exciting job (winter weather in Pacific NW = less boaters... or none some weekends) but had a pretty heart stopping experience this morning when a 30' sailboat that was staying on the dock for the weekend broke loose except for the bow line. Let me tell you, haven't had an "oh crap" adrenaline rush like that in a looooong time. Dunno how many of you are familiar with boats/boating, but we have a nasty warm and wet southerly tearing through here perpendicular to the dock out into the fairway. Just glad the boat didn't break loose completely and have a mosh party with the brand new 44 Jeanneaus in the slips across the way. Or drift into the boats of the people who live in the marina. Bad bad bad news either way (thousands of dollars bad news).

Moral of the story: If you own a boat, always give your lines a good once over for fraying, or get new ones if you have any doubts about them. And get a spring line (or... y'know, three) when you know bad weather is coming.

What kinds of things do you guys have to deal with in your day jobs?
