EASTON, Md.- Easton police say two officers captured a ball python after it was spotted sunbathing on the bridge along the Rails to Trails path earlier this week.
Shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday, officers received a report about a "boa constrictor" having been seen on the bridge. When officers arrived on the scene, they did not see the snake. Of the officers that responded, police said only a few were "eager enough (and willing)" to crawl close along the bridge to look in areas where the snake could be hiding.
Officers eventually located the snake in a partially hollowed portion of the bridge. Police said Lt. Mark Hrobar and Pfc. Lenox Trams were able to corral the snake into a metal trash can.
The snake was later properly identified as a ball python and estimated to be approximately 5-6 years of age. The snake was about 4 feet in length.
A local veterinarian, Chad Hutchison of Community Animal Hospital in Easton, agreed to take and provide care for the snake. He has prior experiencing with caring for reptiles, police noted.
Police suspect that the snake either escaped or was released by a former owner. Hrobar noted that the snake was cold and suspected it would not have survived much longer in the wild.
