When to get a bigger tank?

I have some juvie ball pythons about two feet long and I was wonder what is the best time to move them out of a 20 gal and into a bigger tank? I go by that the tank should be at least half as wide as the length of their body and the length about 2/3 of their length. But i'll usually move them to a 40 gal around 3 feet. I'm a reptile breeder and I have many different types of snakes and housing them has never been a problem for me. I was just wondering if anyone has any better suggestions.
