I don't know if she's for this or against this, but at least she's letting me know that my concerns are being heard and I consider that to be good news.

Dear Mark:

Thank you for contacting me about the regulation of pythons. I appreciate hearing from you.

More then 600 Burmese and African Rock pythons were removed from the Florida Everglades Park between 2002 and 2007. Legislation has been introduced (H.R. 2811) that would include these pythons on a list of injurious species, banning their import and trade in the United States. I understand the concerns you have regarding the effect this legislation may have on pet owners and breeders. H.R. 2811 would not result in the confiscation of these snakes from people who already own them, and although interstate trade and travel would be restricted by this legislation, permits could be applied for to do so for scientific or educational purposes.

H.R. 2811 has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee. While I do not serve on this panel, be assured I well keep your views in mind should this legislation come to the floor for a vote.

Thank you again for contacting me on this issue.

Sincerely,

Betty McCollum
Member of Congress
