    Urgent Action Needed

Urgent Action Needed to Help Stop a Florida Ban on Responsible Snake Ownership

This past year, special interest groups that are opposed to the responsible ownership of pets have worked relentlessly to pass state and federal bans on the responsible ownership on several popular species of pet snakes. While many of the bans still allow people to own their pets, they leave the majority of pet owners with no options for their future. These bills often inhumanely deny pet owners access to specialized veterinary care and pose a serious threat to our Nations ecosystems by leaving desperate people with no options for unwanted pets other than releasing them into the environment.

On Tuesday, February 16, Florida’s Senate Environmental Preservation and Conservation Committee will consider Senate bill 318 to prohibit certain large constrictor snakes as pets in the state. Please make a quick phone call to the committee chair Senator Constantine at (407) 331-9675. Urge him to consider the impact that the bill will have on hard working responsible snake owners in Florida and the potential further damage the bill will have on Florida’s fragile ecosystems. Politely ask him to oppose SB 318 that prohibits the importation, breeding, sale, and possession of Burmese pythons and other large constrictor snakes as pets. Explain that the current reptiles of concern regulation is working and should be given the time needed to accomplish its mandate. If you have an extra moment, also send an email message to him at Constantine.Lee.web@flsenate.gov urging his opposition for this measure.

Thank you for your compassion and action on behalf of pets and responsible pet owners.
