Dear Mr. Ruiz:
Thank you for contacting me to express your opposition to a legislative ban on interstate trade and importation of pythons and boa constrictors. As your Representative, I appreciate hearing from you on this issue.
As you know, my colleague Rep. Kendrick Meek introduced the H.R. 2811 which would amend the criminal code to include the importation and interstate sale of certain species of pythons and boa constrictors. Although many responsible Americans keep these species of reptiles as pets, we cannot neglect the harm and destruction these specific species have on the environment when they escape or are let into the wild by their owners. Experts estimate there are more 100,000 burmese pythons within the Everglades National Park. This species is extraordinary adaptive and although it is not native to the Everglades, it has adapted to the environment and continues to breed, laying 50-100 eggs each time.
Like you I am concerned with any legislation that would prevent Americans from taking their lawful pets across state lines for veterinary care, evacuation, or for any other important reasons. You raise a valid point regarding interstate travel of people with pet snakes and I will keep views and wishes in mind as this bill moves through the legislative process.
Currently this bill has been referred out of the House Committee on Judiciary and awaits action on the House Floor. Thank you again for taking the time to share your views with me. Please keep in touch.
Sincerely,
LOIS CAPPS
Member of Congress
