Most Ridiculous Herp Stories
I am looking for any sort of ridiculous herp stories here. Any herp story really, so long as you want to share it, I am sure we all want to read it.
I have a couple good ones.
I was doing an education exhibit at a state fair a couple years back, sort of thing where you go with about 50 herps, a lot of fake plants and a ton of joot and make your own little jungle of glass tanks. One day during this event I was handling an albino burm when a man approached me. He look at the snake for a few moments that looked at me and said, "That snake ain't nothin, back in college my cousin had a thirty foot bone restrictor".
I was rather taken aback by the comment and was unsure how to respond at first, so I tried as nicely as I possibly could to explain that he meant Boa Constrictor, and that unless it was an Anaconda, his cousin likely had a burmese or reticulated python, is it really was anywhere near as long as he had said. He got rather uppity with me about the whole idea that he was wrong, and told me he was positive that it was a thirty foot bone restrictor and I should go look up the species if I am going to go around telling people about snakes. So I thanked him for his advice and to this day have not found any information on his fabled "Bone Restrictor"
Now, a completely different story.
During these educational exhibits, working at an exotic animal store and so on, I heard this story from several different people. It basically went like this.
"I have a friend who had a 10-16 foot snake and he/she used to sleep with it ever night. It would sleep in a pile at the foot of her bed every night. One day it started sleeping laying up next to her and slept like that for a few nights. He/she got worried so they called a vet and asked, and eventually someone told them that the snake had started sleeping like that because it was sizing her/him up to see if it could him/her". I probably heard that story close to a dozen times. I started to wonder if it was a lot of different people, or just one story that managed to travel really, really well. One chilly november after noon, I was working at the pet store when a customer comes in with a question about her snake. She proceeds to tell me about her large BCI and how it sleeps with her in a pile at the foot of her bed everynight, and it recently started sleeping stretched out next to her. I thought back on how many times I had heard that story. I asked how recently she had fed it, and as it turned out, her other reason for being in the store was that she needed a couple frozen bunnies. I told her about the stories I had heard and she said that all sounded ridiculous and refused to accept that the snake was going to try and eat her. So I offered this advice, feed your snake, if it has just eaten and it still sleeps stretched out next to you, it just might not be trying to eat you. She fed the snake, the snake slept as it had been, stretched out and cuddled up with her. Then it dawned on me, and I had an idea. I asked how warm she keeps her bed room. She told me how it was generally above seventy degrees, but there had been a cold spell where we lived and her heater could only keep it around 60 degrees at night. That pretty much solved it all. I told her to go buy and extra heater and get her room wormed back up to the 70+ temps the snake was used to. Two days later she calls and informs the store that her snake has returned to it's regular sleeping arrangements. The moral of that story, snakes like to be warm, and people are like one big heat pad.
Alright, lay it on me, I wanna hear your stories.
