Just a warning to everyone who thinks it is ok to go away for a few days and not have someone pop in to check on their animals.
We just moved into our new place this past week. The snakes were the last to be moved to the new place. I was at the house at 6pm on Thursday and everyone was fine. Came back Friday afternoon to a flooded basement, including the snake room. I have no idea how long the water had been flowing but it was several inches deep in some areas. The drain had been partially clogged from the dryer lint that had not been swept up yet.
Now by some small miracle, the area the racks were in, only got some of the water. The carpet was soaked (thank GOD for extra padding to absorb! I am talking water splashing when you walked, even there) but the water didn't damage the snakes, racks or hit any electrical cords.
This could have been a heartbreaking disaster. The only reason I went over at that time was to check on the snakes. I know all too well that things can go wrong quickly and felt it was better to be safe.
Please, I know snakes are fine by themselves for awhile and don't specifically need to be checked every day but ... what would I have done if I didn't go when I did? How would you handle it if this happened to you? Keep your critters safe, have someone check on them! If your family or friends can't/won't do it, call a professional pet sitter.
