I found a guy who's selling them in trios. Is trios the norm? Can I keep more together if need be? I'm so happy to have found someone that doesn't sell them for $20 each like the petstore

It is like any other rodents you are breeding you need to experiment and see what works for YOU

Personally I had better success with 1.2 than other higher number.

I sell mine in trios, but I keep them in 2.3 that way is my male dies I do not have to introduce another.

But my girls are too high. If they all drop at once I lose pinks because it is too crowded.

I would suggest 1.2 or 2.2.

Thanks! It's nice to know if over buying them would cause issues. I think i'll stick to the 1.2 and if I need more babies I'll get 2 or 3 groups rather then stess them out and get less

Tested this subject in GREAT detail. 1.2 produced the best number of babies per mom numbers.

I been doing 1.4s & 1.5s for a few months It seems to be doing real well for me but I babysit every day & swap young around so everybodys the same size so everybody grows the same. You can't go wrong with trios thats the norm.

I have three 1.2 and one 1.3.

My 1.2 are producing so much better.


I do not breed on a scale like Mike C. has but I would say my 1.2s are doing better.

My 1.3 is my most exciting because that is where my best "morphs" are coming out of.

I started with a 1.3 group but im setting up 2 new groups at 1.2

I tried 1.3 1.4 and even played with a 1.6 group, Did that for about 4 months and it seemed like nobody was getting it done quite as well as my 1.2 group. So recently spread them all out and have several 1.2 groups and have more babies on the ground now than I ever have had.

I have only had my ASF's for 9 weeks and they haven't bred yet, so all i can do is regurgitate what i've read here.

A lot of people talk about 1.3 as being standard. 1.6 is for people who need more. And somewhere i read a guy was doing 1.20. So i'll agree with Deb and say figure out what you need, then go from there. The ASF caresheet is a great place to get some good info.

My one piece of personal advice, research first and know what you are buying. I am almost convinced that my 1.2 has become 3.0. if my last rat drops some nads and i have three males, i am gonna lose it on the guy that i bought them from. It's my fault, they were young and i didn't know how to sex them.
