    I'm a crook! -or- Know your by-laws!

So here I am wondering about a new snake in the spring, and wanting to check out the local legality of some of the larger constrictors (Boas specifically). I check out the local by-law here and discover that my rather non-threatening JCP is illegal in the city limits!

Fortunately, there seems to be little enforcement of this by-law as I can buy pretty much any Carpet python from a local petstore or breeder with no trouble. I do find it amusing that the City of Winnipeg bans carpet pythons, and yet Burmese Pythons are allowed

So, who else here is a rotten no-good criminal lowlife?

I hadn't thought of that, but import/export is federally controlled, and this is a municipal ban on ownership of even locally-bred animals. It's certainly possible though.

I also find it a bit weird that a city that has annual lows at around -40 worries about mid-sized sub-tropical constrictors. It's not like you are going to have wild breeding colonies out here

I'm sort of a criminal...or I will be in a couple years. Not supposed to have snakes over 8 feet, and my dwarf retic will certainly top that. I did go buy the permit I needed for him by Texas state law though, so I consider it an even trade off. Not like the snake SWAT team is going to bust down the door or anything, lol.

In the city I live in there is a no constrictor law. That's pretty much everything that's not venomous with a small few exceptions. It's funny that there are a few pet shops in the city that sell snakes. So the law is rarely enforced. That being said I had the animal control show up at my house last summer because of a complaint from a neighbor. They were there to confiscate whatever I had at the house. Thankfully I keep all my snakes at my building in a city that allows constrictors. The moral of the story is I didn't lose anything except my feelings towards my neighbor Stupid laws!!! Brian(BHB)

Wow Brian, I can't imagine what kind of loss that *could* have been. Your collection looks like it is easily in the millions of dollars. Would they really bankrupt a well known business because of a municipal by-law?

I assume it was good planning that had all of your animals off-site

What all did they get from your house? Im sure you must have had a snake or two in there just as a closer pet than in the shop?

Re: I'm a crook! -or- Know your by-laws!

when my wife and i bought our house we paid quite a bit more for it than we would have had we bought one in the ajacent city. the problem was, their municipal law state that it's illegal to own any animal deamed 'dangerous to public safety'. that literally could be ANY animal, so we made sure to tell the realtor to exclude any houses in the city of kalamazoo from our search.
in the end it worked out because the public schools are much better where i live anyway...
