    Dumeril Boa Feeding

I have an 07 male Dumeril who I feed 2 mice weekly. I tired switching him to rats a few times, but he just gets aggressive when he smells the rats. So, I really don't have any problem feeding him mice for the next year or so.

My question is should I be feeding him more then 2 mice weekly? He has been gaining around 75 grams a month which I think is fine. I would love to hear some feedback from other Dumeril owners.

    Re: Dumeril Boa Feeding

I cant answer your question since I have a similiar problem. My dummerils is very aggressive when food smell is in the air and strikes like crazy. She is so over excited that she strikes so fast and hard that she misses, She seems to get frustrated and then gives up. So she has done this the last few feedings. I have left the prey with her and she doesnt eat it. She wants it warm and fresh not sitting there going cold. So my problem is now she is just aggressive period, where before she was the tamest snake ever. I am afriad to handle her now, I think she might be aggressive cuase shes hungry.

My male only getting aggressive with rats. Other wise he's a sweet heart. He's very docile and is my wife's favorite snake because of that. He pretty much will eat as many mice as I throw in there.

    Re: Dumeril Boa Feeding

I'm in the process of converting my dumeril's (who's currently on 1 adult mouse per feeding) to taking rats - and having difficulty. At first she wouldn't even pay attention to rats. The last attempt, however, I scented the rat for a few hours with mouse bedding...and my dumeril's did strike the rat. But immediately let it go and looked at me after! LOL!

    Re: Dumeril Boa Feeding

My dum started on rats. I didnt even bother with mice.

    rat pinks
    rat pups
rat weans (thats what shes on now)

Its hard to say x number of mice ='s x number of rats.

I would try to get him on rats that way you dont have to do multiple prey items.

    Re: Dumeril Boa Feeding

I'm getting my first dum ( female, high pink hatchling 13" ) from Cherryville Farms on Monday. I'm told she's on live or F/T fuzzy or small mice. Any suggestions concerning feeding size, switching to rats etc.. would be welcome. This is my first Dum (and Boa as well).
Is there a site that specializes in dums?
How well do they hold their color (esp. the pink)?
Is everyone's Dum feeding with the "ambush" style I've read about?
    thanks,Kyle

what do you mean he just gets aggresive with rats? like he strikes at them defensively or after he smells one strikes at you defensively?
