Question Thinking of getting a second BP, bumblebee or super pastel

    Hi,

Like the title says, I have got the BP bug and am thinking of getting another (already got a 14 month old male norm) Now with an eye to breeding in the future, there is a bumble bee male08, and a super pastel mal08, and a pinstripe male 07, at my local rep shop.

1/ I was thinking of getting the bumble and pairing him to 2 normal females when the bumble reaches breeding size/weight.

2/ Or, get the 07 pinstripe, then next year look for a female spider/or pastel and pair them to get the ball rolling.

which purchase would be more versitile? I only want to buy morphs i like (spiders, pins, supers, etc) and not go down what could fetch the most money route, but if i can get the hobby to pay for itself in the near future if the breeding is sucessful that would be great

    any advice warmly welcomed

    Scott

It depends on what you want most.
Do you want spiders and pastels from bumble bees? Or would you rather have just pastels.
Or would you like to wait a longer amount of time after getting a pinstripe to get a female spider or pastel up to weight in two years to breed those?

If I had the money, I would in your case.

Buy a male bumble bee and breed it in a year.
Buy a FEmale pinstripe now or soon.
Hold back a male pastel or spider from the bumble bee clutch, and save yourself some money down the road. This would also only take a a little more than a year instead of two to get up to weight.

    :]

Wink Re: Thinking of getting a second BP, bumblebee or super pastel

    Thanks Blackcrystal,

Yep like your suggestion. I'm a bit impatient (bad Aries trait), so i was going to lay out the money for a couple of breeding weight morphs and have a go at pairing them up soon as possible. But I think i'de be rushing in, so i think buying 08' male/s and waiting/growing him up will be best.

Hopefully the bumble is still in the shop. Should i not bother with the male pin? don't think i can afford both the male bumble and a female pin this year

Mind, if i could pick up a breeding size/weight female spider late next year, i could try pairing the male07 pin to her, and may be getting some spinners, then pairing the bumble to some norm females (for a variety cutch)

As for which i like best, i equally like the pastel/spider/pin/ morphs and their combos, so i would be happy with any of those, just would like the most variety to open up the gene pool to get a good project hopefully started sometime in the near future!

    cheers Scott

Yeah I'm with Blackcrystal on this one. Your best bet genetically (in my mind anyways) would be to go with the bumblebee for sure. Bred to a normal you'd have a chance at spiders, pastels and more bumblebees lol. Plus they're usually just a stunning snake to look at in and of themselves. I can't wait to breed my spider he looks like a freakin bumblebee already lol all super high gold so I know he'll make some awesome bees. Good luck with whatever you choose!

You can't get a bumble bee out of a Bee x Normal clutch.
You would get a 50% Pastel and a 50% Spider chance per egg.
    At least I'm pretty sure..

    Hi,

I'm pretty sure you can get a bee out of that combo - the odds might be a little slim but it is genetically possible since the parent can pass on both the pastel and the spider genes.

Breeding a bee to a normal will get you more bees possibly. Id get the Bee, Pastels are getting as hard to sell as normals will give you pastels and spiders to boot I mainly say this because alot of the people who want to start out breeding see pastels as gold mines because you can get adult males cheap. They breed these to a few normals and usually they are not that pretty but still you see pastels 100xs more than you would see bees.

    Ah, now I understand.
I was thinking of it like a super pastel, where it could only pass on one of the alleles for pastel. But because pastel and spiders are two different allele pairs, they could both be passed on.

Re: Thinking of getting a second BP, bumblebee or super pastel

Thanks for the replies....spellin mistakes and all!! lol

Interesting that the pastels are becoming quite common. Of course over here in UK we are behind you as the North American breeders are the pioneers in the BP market (NERD etc) and this filters through to the British market abet at a higher price over here.

just done the genetics wizard http://www.snake-zone.com/genetics/wizard/

A bumble x norm could give a cutch based on 4 good eggs- 25% bumble 25% pastel 25% spider 25% normal.

Just to give an idea of uk prices, my local rep shop has a female orange ghost 07 in at £1800 ($3045) and a male OG 07 at £995. The shop price is probably slightly higher than breeder direct. How much would you pay for the same in US?

The bumble is not at my local shop, its a good drive away, can anyone point me to what questions i should ask the seller before driving over to see it

    thanks again for your views!
