Well I said I never would but...

I said I never would raise my own rats, soft fur rats to be exact, but it looks like I should have never said it! I have a pair of het pieds that are on and off constantly! One minute she'll eat a live sm. Rat the next she'll take f/t!?!?!?!?!

Does anyone know where I can get 2.8 soft fur rats from around the Virginia/North Carolina border? I live in Danville, VA and maybe could order some thru the local pet stores but I wanted to check, please e-mail me at: jweaver@mapl.net

    Thanks in advance,
    Jay

In Virginia I believe you actually need a license to breed them (By them I mean African Soft Fur Rats), but there is a guy I know named Dan who has a license to breed them, I can't remember his last name but if you call: (804) 717-2282 That's "Off The Ark" they buy their rodents from him and I'm sure they can get you in contact with him. He was usually around there after 5 on Fridays. I can't remember where exactly he's located in VA but I believe he's just north of you.

    Thanks Aaron,
I don't plan on selling them just using them to support my picky BPs. What's the reason behind the license, does VA not want them to get loose and multiply? If I have to I'll get a license. I just have heard that they are not as bad on the smell as mice or rats, have you had to raise them before?

I haven't but I have a friend who's 0.1 BP will only eat them and he works for that shop and gets his from Dan. We discussed breeding them then and it turns out you need a license to do that, not sure why exactly. That being said Dan is one of the few people in the state of VA who has a license to breed them. Chances are you won't be able to buy them directly from him either because that's generally how he works but Off The Ark would more than likely make a special order for you ask for Vinny, he runs the place and could get you a definite answer on being able to get a hold of them, also Ryan is the fellow who works there that has the stubborn girl so he could fill you in a little bit more than I could.

Thanks Aaron, I will give it a try.
