Who is your team? (Baseball).. and 'the Record'
Just bored and wondering what teams people like and why. I don't want to start a "your team sucks" thread, just state what team(s) you like and (if you want) why.
First off, the New York Yankees. Why, they have created a dynasty. 26 World Series championships. Since the World Series was started in 1903, they have won 25% of current championships to date; current year minus year WS was started then subtract one for the WS that has yet to occur= 2008-1903-1= 104 (then I forgot how I got 25%). They have had the some of the greatest baseball players of all time over there: Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Whitey Ford, Lou Gehrig, Phil Rizzuto, Roger Maris, Derek Jeter, Yogi Berra, Reggie Jackson, Don Larsen, Don Mattingly, and so on. They have not won a WS title in 7 years. So what, at least 25% of Major League team wish they could say that. They are not having a good year. But they dominated the 1900's. They have made the playoffs 13 consecutive years. Not many teams can say that. They are in a 7 year drought of not winning the WS, their biggest drought was 18 years I believe. Still not bad. They still have great potential, all they need right now is a a new pitching roster; with the exception of Joba Chamberlain and Mariano Rivera. Maybe switching stadiums will bring them good fortune. As long as no Red Sox fans bury jerseys in it...
My other team is the St. Louis Cardinals. Mainly because they are rivals to the Cubs...
Also, I wanted to bring up the Home Run record. Personally, I think Roger Maris should still hold the record. I think Barry Bonds should be stripped of that 'title' for his steroids use. As should Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa. McGwire for obvious steroid use and Sammy for steroid use and probably using that corked bat more than once. Even so, back in the 60's, ballparks were much bigger! In the old Yankee Stadium, straight away center was 461', right-center 407', and left-center 457'. Think about the tremendous strength Roger Maris had to have to hit balls out of parks that size, though it's true there was a short right field porch. I think Mickey Mantle could have hit even more if he would have stayed healthy.
