Have You Seen or Heard of This?

today, when i went to feed my boa i found the mouse acting peculiar. he was laying on his back looking up at me with another mouse standing next to him. he had peed next to his body.

he managed to get to his feet and crawl around only on three legs. one leg seemed to be inoperable. then, as if he had parasites, he started having minor convulsions and laid back down on his side. he continued to have these body twitches for about 6 minutes before taking his last breath.

what does that sound like to you?

i am concerned if the mouse i got from the local pet store has tainted mice...and if the other two mice i have here right now are tainted as well. yes, i feed live, not frozen thawed...which would resolve this matter.

inside the mouse tank i had pretzels, crackers, cornflakes and a big thing of fresh water. i purchased the mice two days ago from the pet store. the other mice are acting healthy.

thank you edie! and congratulations on the BPOM. i loved your pictures. it makes me miss my BP's i left in the states. i like my boa...but have yet to really get attached like i was to my bp's.

another thing is, i had sugar gliders too. i was the second owner and they took to me pretty good. i was told that it was best for them to have one owner, but it worked out wonderfully. a few months after i bought them i got busy with my schedule and couldnt spend as much time with them as needed. i gave them to a girl who would come over just to play with them. she treated them like her babies, so it was perfect.

(by the way, i wasnt aware there was a feeders section...thanks again)

Pretzels and crackers?? Did they have salt on them? Salted foods are NOT good for rodents.

Otherwise, I might say a fight but unlikely. Hmm, best wait for the other rodenty people to give their opinions.

Yeah, there are a lot of sections that I keep finding that I never even knew about - especially since they just added more. I don't feed live and the few pet rats I've had never acted like this but people who do their own breeding or feed live might be able to help in the feeders section.

The sugar gliders do take a lot of time, I have 4 right now, and two of them are under a year old - ones just about a month or so out of pouch so she is only about two inches long right now and she is so cute!

argentra, i somehow didnt see your post until now.

I didnt know that about rodents. i usually buy the mice and by that night my snake has eaten. but in this case, my snake had no appetite and i had to keep them a couple of nights. the only thing they had to eat without salt was cornflakes, which they had plenty of and seemed to prefer. thanks for the salt input.

my wife told me that she thought maybe the mouse that was standing over it when i got there had possibly killed it. the mouse that died was the smaller of the three. i wasnt able to see signs of body damage, but then again i have never seen a 'mouse fight.'

First, I do have to mention that the food your offering is pretty crappy.

Second, I have no clue what happened to your mouse, but it almost sounds like a heat stroke.

Any more info you can give would help, but I don't rightly know if you'll get an answer.

Go to petsmart and buy some Mazuri food for the mice you bring home. House them in a well ventilated tub on aspen bedding, and keep them in comfortable temps. Feeders do deserve the same respect as our pets.

connie, i live in costa rica. no petsmart and certainly no Mazuri. temperature here is 75 degrees with a nice breeze in the valley.

my Boa did not eat the mice the first day i brought them home, so, i had to put them in a tank with an open top. i am not usually ever housing mice.

Unmedicated hog feed or a high quality senior dog food will work in your situation. It's always a good idea to have a tank or tub set up in those instances when the snake refuses the prey.
