Now I'm not saying he shouldn't have been punished, but how many of you are being hypocritical? I'd be willing to bet that just about every guy that has driven a car has raced at least once. Something tells me it wasn't his first time though.

I agree with you on all accounts. Indeed he should be punished, but in my personal opinion... He will learn more from his friends misfortunes that day than 8 months in jail could ever teach a person.

I used to drive my car like a mad man every time I got behind the wheel. Until AutoX started in the town I live in. It's organized street racing that's legal... so now I usually only drive fast when I'm doing that. (2007 Volkswagen GTi - magnaflow exhaust/K&N intake)

Well, we don't really. Even though it was foolish behavior, it was an accident. The passenger was permanently injured not killed. This kid is only 17 years old. I joined the Army in 1969 in very turbulent times at his age and did plenty of reckless stuff (much more than this kid) and I realize just how young age 17 is. I fail to understand the jubilation being shown at this tragedy by so many. Is it simply that he was born into money that causes this reaction?

I don't hold it against him for being wealthy. I do hold it against him for being stupid. As someone who was once killed by street racing, I just hate it plain and simple.. I was getting the mail one evening up at the box, and these two young moronic guys were racing; the one flew onto the shoulder and literally came within inches of me at the mailbox. I had nowhere to go; there was a wall of plowed snow though the roads were clear. It is one of those "no one cares until someone gets hurt" things I think, in many cases. If you support street racing, how would you feel if your innocent kid relative or friend or parent was wiped out as they stood on the curb or rode in their car?!
I have never raced.. I have passed people that were driving 20 mph Under the speed limit and then they sped up as I passed. I barely broke the speed limit though!

I understand your point completely... and agree with the fact that the open road isn't the place to be racing. In AutoX however, it's very well supervised in a super controlled environment and I highly doubt anyone has ever been hit by a car that was racing. I do have a friend that wrecked his mom's S2000 while racing in AutoX, but he didn't hit anyone... He just through the car into a big ditch.
