First Clutch of the Season(here anyway)

Amani, a normal female who I bought in 04 from Don Hamper, and who was bred to my 100% het Pied Classic Jungle male, laid her eggs today. She gave me a whole ONE good egg and 2 extreme boob eggs. All have lots of veins and look good, so we'll see. She has those het pied markers, so maybe she is a het Pied, LOL! Don't they tend to be awful breeders?

She laid 2 other slugs, but they were definitely non-fertile and I didn't feel the need to incubate them. I have the 3 remaining in a 6qt tub with about 1" of perlite and the fluorescent light grating. Substrateless incubation just makes it fool-proof for me, and I don't have to be as neurotic

Awww, sorry the clutch wasn't as good as you had hoped - here's hoping you prove her out - she's a beautiful girl!

Just a quick question. Is it normal for the non-fertile part of a boob egg to get the fuzzy mold on it? I figured it was and haven't touched it other than to candle it and lightly spray it with anti-fungal powder spray. The fertile part still looks good, nice veining and is still plump(no wet-looking spots on it). The other normal-sized egg is still doing fine too.

Re: First Clutch of the Season(here anyway)

My one experience thus far with our boob egg was that it developed a very, VERY slight grey fuzz on it early on. Barely anything really Becky. I dabbed at it a bit to remove it, it never came back and I have a viable hatchling poking it's nose out of that boob egg. Appears to be a bit smaller than the rest but not horribly so. I was told by a good number of experienced folks here to incubate it and not to give up unless it went completely and utterly nasty on me.

    Becky,
Congrats on the eggs, and it is not uncommon for the boob portion to get moldy. I would expect the boob eggs to be fine.

Congrats Becky, I clean any mold off them with some cholorahex solution on a q-tip. usually does the trick.

Re: First Clutch of the Season(here anyway)

Thanks! I didn't get any boob eggs last year, and this is the first year to breed this female. I'll piddle with it tomorrow with some chlorhex and see how that goes. This egg is probably 30g-45g? Somewhere around there.. I can weigh it tomorrow while I'm fiddling It seems to be doing alright, nice thick veining, shell is nicely calcified, not discolored, and isn't denting, so hopefully it's ok.

The other boob egg that was smaller than this one had very weak veining and was mostly yellow inside, not the nice pink that these other two are. I decided to toss it as it was getting one of those "I'm going bad" wet spots on it, and was sinking a bit.

She's not a possible het Pied, but you never know with those thick black lines running down the sides of their belly.
