Turtle lovers, By all means email this person. She pretty much is killing it if anyone listens to him/her on how to take care of it! Easy pets for little kids? Someone should call her in for that comment

Kinda confused, what part is so bad other than the kid pet part? We have 2 RES that are my 8 year old sons pets and he has had them for 4 years. So why are you so mad?

We have a female red-eared pond slider, approx 5yrs old, that we need to get rid of (too many turtles, not enough tanks). The turtle is approx 7in across the shell (head to toe). It is mostly aquatic, although you can take it out of the tank & let it dry out for awhile. I will provide a small amount of food to help you out. You will need a tank (at least 10gal, preferably more like 20-30) with just gravel & a filter. She doesn't need much care. If you need to go out of town, just feed her small live goldfish. My kids love to watch the turtles swimming around in the tank & crawling on the floor. Easy pet for little kids...and you don't have to worry about cleaning up fur or dealing with allergies.

Pretty much if you knew nothing about turtles and wanted a free pet, the uninformed buyer would get the impression that they could use(AT least) a ten gallon with no uvb lights or heat, and no way to get out of the water other than " Taking them out to dry" every once and a while. Small children and turtles do not mix unless under constant supervision and alot of hand washing afterwards.

A turtle that size needs at least a 60 gallon, uvb and heat, basking platforms, no gravel, and goldfish are believed to be bad for turtles in the long run.

The only thing missing from that statement is the need for a platform to bask on. A 10 would be on the small side, but is do able.

This is also a correct statement, though they can easily go a week without food. If you put in a dozen or so goldfish in before you leave, the turtle will hunt them over a few days time. Although Rosy Reds are better than goldfish. A lot of people actually call rosy reds feeder goldfish, which is inaccurate.

They are an incredebly easy pet for kids as long as you are not expecting the type pet you hold all the time. Same as goldfish being good first pets. They are not to hold, but to watch and enjoy.



Do you or have you ever owned a RES?

Ah, I was typing as you were editing. Actually, if you provide the proper food, UVB is not needed. There are several turtle foods that have vit D3 in them as well as calcium. Also, a 60 gal is over kill for a turtle that size. I have 2 RES approx that size in a 40 long, and it is more that enough room. Almost to big. Sometimes they have a bit of a problem catching the fish.

1. A ten gallon would be fine for a one inch turtle, this one is 6

Yes, three res and a few painted turtles.
Nothing wrong with it, especialy once they lived in our back yard pond.

Just curious with RES being so territorial and aggressive. Most "breeders" advise against it.

So I guess you are not in an area where RES are restriced? They are on the banned list here now, unless you owned them before a certain time. Not allowed to have them in outdoor ponds, as they are considered environmental pest. Breed like rabbits, and elbow out the native population.

I want to add to that, I made sure they they did not compete for food, or fight. Vet checks from time to time made sure that they were all healthy, so nothing was being shared. Being outside they had mulitple basking spots, so no competing there.

Cool, want to share some pictures i always wanted a musk turtle, but never got to getting one. i Live in GA, and all my turtles were female. They were in a large me-built pond inside a fence, inside a fenced in back yard.
