I am SO proud!
My 5th grade daughter has been super insanely busy recently.
1) - She had an Odyssey of the Mind competition on March 15. I coach the team which consists of her and 6 other girls. They won 2nd place!
2) - She had the Science Fair at her school yesterday. She won 1st place in the Behavioral & Social Sciences category, and gets to go on to the county competition. She did a project on teaching rats to go through a maze, and whether or not different rewards would make them learn faster. I've posted a few times on here about it. Due to tons of problems with how her teacher was handling the situation it was a huge headache for our family. But we still had fun with the actual experiment and I was impressed that my daughter's outlook on the project remained positive despite the negativity from her teacher. A HUGE THANKS TO BP.NET'S VERY OWN MEME FOR LOANING US THE RATS!!
3) - She has an Art Fair tomorrow. This isn't really anything she can "win". It is for the whole county and the art teachers are supposed to select a wide variety of outstanding artwork done by students of different grade levels. She made a sculpture of a snake that will be on display.
Also, as a sort of footnote to the Science Fair.... the other girls on my Odyssey of the Mind team did very well. Every single one of them won a prize except one who was a 3rd grader so she wasn't in the Science Fair at all... 3 firsts including my daughter, 2 thirds, and an honorable mention.

Congrats, sounds like you have a real prodigy on your hands there!!
Funny that they have a category in an elementary school science fair called "Behavioral and Social Sciences". I never heard those words put together until I got to college.

Re: I am SO proud!
Awww congrats to your daughter and her very proud family! One of my daughters did a science fair project years ago involving our rats and it was quite involved (live animal rules) but she loved it too! That was so nice of you Meme to lend out some of your ratties.

Congrats to you and your daughter! That's wonderful. I remember all the hassle you had getting the paperwork through. I'm glad it yielded such great results.
That was so sweet of Meme to help out like that as well!

Congrats to your daughter and her teammates. I too recall the hassles you were having with this.
It's good to see her maintain the positive outlook as well as be a winner in the face of such obstacles.
Wonder if parenting had anything to do with that?
I may not be very smart, but what if I am?

Thank you.
It constantly amazes me the things my daughter is learning at a young age. But, in other areas, school seems to be weaker. Like she isn't as fast with her times tables as I was at that age, and her spelling is quite a bit weaker too (at least according to my best memory of what I was like at that age). Maybe they figure that isn't as necessary with calculators and spell checkers everywhere?
But as far as the categories, the kids didn't choose those. They just made up a project, and then the teachers had to figure out what category it fit in.

Thank you! We are super proud.
I think I remember you posting on one of my other threads about this. Your daughter's project had something to do with giving them different diets I think?

Thanks so much. It really was a hassle, but absolutely worth it.

I think this is what impresses me the most. My daughter is smart and very capable of putting together a very good science project. I wasn't expecting her to win, but I wasn't surprised either.
She is a very sensitive child though, and easily affected by the moods of others, or a random comment that would hardly be noticed by most people. So for her to just let it roll off her back was a big deal. That part DID surprise me.
