Full cage ambient temps
So I'm rearranging my setup to accomodate more snakes.
And the deal is, because my blood doesn't use his hot side, EVER. And Kara of NERD has hers setup this way. I'm getting rid of his hot spot and radiant heat paneling his whole cage. I need my helix to control some other stuff too.
He now needs his whole cage at an ambient temp. Which should be what?
Its currently 81 to 82. With a hot spot of 88.
Any help is appreciated. Maybe kara will chime in.

Re: Full cage ambient temps
If you're going to be accommodating more snakes, why don't you use an oil-filled heater & fan to raise the overall ambient room temp to a steady 80 degrees?
Problem solved!

Because that's what I'm doing now.
And the girlfriend doesn't want a whole room heated for the snakes.
So I'm radiant heat paneling my T-10's.

I think you're going to run into issues if you go with the RHP option, i.e. it's potentially going to be difficult to fine-tune as well.
What does the ambient in the cage run if you put the warm side @ 87-ish? On the cages where I am running heat, they still only top out around 82 with a hot spot set to 88-89. Granted, my room is heated to 79-80 right now, but try that & see if it makes a difference before you go getting all crazy with different heaters & spending a bunch of money.
If there's ANYTHING I've learned in my years of keeping snakes, it's that the simplest approach is usually best.
Just my $.02...
P.S. Maybe get a new girlfriend, one who likes snakes!

Re: Full cage ambient temps
Haha I know the easiest way to do it is with my oil filled heater. It works like a dream too
And the ambient like I said stays at around 81 to 82 in my room that's heated to 82 degrees. With his hot spot right now around 87 to 88 degrees.
The thing like I said is that the girlfriend doesn't want a room dedicated to snakes. But doesn't mind me keeping em. Which I understand. And with girls the thing I've learned is to avoid any confrontation. Haha
So my only other option is to RHP all my cages. So that's what I'm gonna do.
No I'm not excited about it. And its expensive. But that's my only other option.
I'm just asking what the ambient needs to be for him if he is without a basking area. I thought that's what you did? I know others do it too. I just haven't seen any temps posted.

Re: Full cage ambient temps
80 average for my ambient...may go as high as 82 or as low as 79.
Good luck!!!
K~
P.S. Tell her that compromise works both ways.

Re: Full cage ambient temps
Thanks Kara!!!
I'm even having to get rid of some snakes!!!! Haha
So I'm gonna have to dig up something good for her to compromise on!!! Haha
I think she thinks its no big deal to RHP the cages. Not realizing those buggers are 85 dollars a piece!!
Any ideas of what to ask for? Haha

Easy! Explain to her that with the money you'd be saving by NOT RHPing your cages, you'll be able to put more towards something you can do together - i.e. a vacay (even a weekender), a big event (what are her interests?), etc.
That's where it comes down to the give-and-take. You just have to follow through & do it! The more you make an effort to balance relationship stuff with herp stuff, the more herp stuff you should be able to do (from someone who has been involved w/non-herpers & had to make those concessions, too).

Re: Full cage ambient temps
No interests. That's the killer!!! Haha
And she's a tough one. I could say that the money I could save would help towards getting her a better engagement ring. Or a vacation or what have you like you suggested.
All fine and dandy. Till we come back from the trip and there's still an 82 degree room in the house for the next 20 years.
Wouldn't happen. Haha
So this is my option.
