    novalson-s

For anyone who uses Novalson-s to clean and disinfect hides, water dishes, and tubs, how do you go about doing this?

I've always used bleach and diluted it with water in a big tub and just let things soak for 30 minutes, then I would rinse let sit and then rinse one more time and dry off.

Now with Novalson-s do I dilute in a spray bottle and spray wipe for cleaning and do the same as I did with bleach for disinfecting?

I know that you don't or well read somewhere that you don't need to rinse twice and let sit like you do with bleach cause it's safe to snakes. So what is the correct procedure for disinfecting with this product?

I use this (it's a generic version, works wonderful)l. I also know the owner...

here is the answer to your question... how to dilute it:

To dilute: Fill 32-oz sprayer with clean water, then add 1/4 ounce of Chlorhexidine solution OR add 1 ounce to one gallon of clean water. This bottle comes with its own dispensing chamber; simply unscrew the black cap and lightly squeeze the bottle until the solution fills the chamber to the desired level.

Directions for use: To clean wounds, rinse with diluted solution, then rinse with water and pat dry with sterile gauze. To disinfect terrarium/cage surfaces and accessories, first clean thoroughly, then spray with diluted solution and allow it to sit for 15-20 minutes. Objects can also be soaked in the solution. To sterilize, allow it to sit or soak for at least 30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with water.

Chlorhexidine gluconate is a safe and effective disinfectant for cleaning superficial wounds and disinfecting terrariums, cages, and accessories. Comes in 8-oz and 16-oz bottles, each with its own handy dispensing chamber. Also available in 32-oz refill. Each ounce makes one gallon of solution.

Generic quarternary ammonia compound similar to Nolvasan™ and Virosan™. Just as effective, but costs much less!

    Re: novalson-s

Nolvasan S (http://www.petvetsupply.com/dismfra001.html) isn't chlorhexidine gluconate but chlorhexidine diacetate, which is "mildly to moderately toxic when administered by inhalation, oral and dermal routes" (EPA). In highly diluted form, chlorhexidine gluconate is used in human mouthwash. Unfortunately, both of these disinfectants are discussed and sometimes marketed under the names "Novalsan," "Virosan" or just "chlorhexidine." The "Novalsan" sold by (the excellent) ProExotics is chlorhexidine glucate, for example.

    Read these:

http://www.reptilechannel.com/reptil...ake-cages.aspx (Though check with the manufacturer about supposedly short shelf life of chlorhexidine glucate, as this seems to be in dispute).
