    More Weird Eating Habits

I had almost the same experience as Zeek (a few posts earlier).

I got my first BP Buddy a little over a week ago. Hes a year old and almost 3 ft long. When I got him, he was in a shed so I was told not to feed him until he was through. Well, he finished a few days ago and so I went and bought a small rat. When I bought "Buddy" the breeder told me he was feeding live mice...but this being my first snake and all and all the conflicting advice about live vs F/T I decided I'd kill the rat first. So I killed it and proceeded to feed my snake...Did the little jiggle for a little while... He came up to it...then just ignored it. I left the room for about an hour once I knew for sure that the rat was in fact dead. When I came back the rat was still in the same place that I put him. So, I took the rat out and hes still in the freezer.

I decided today that I might as well try live mice-since thats what hes used to. I bought 2 since I wasn't sure how many he might eat. I put the first one in this evening and it ran around for a few mins before Buddy got him. And then he just left him there. I came back about 5 mins later and apparently Buddy came back to the mouse and ate him because there was NO sign of the mouse and Buddy had a slight bump. About an hour after eating the mouse he came out of his hide and was looking all around his cage...like maybe he was hungry...so I put the other one in. Its been in there for a while (hes in the same room as I am) and hes ignoring it. I don't know if hes just not hungry anymore or he just wants me to leave him alone...any ideas?

If it's been over an hour, I'd say take it out. If you can keep it alive for a few more days, you could offer it to Buddy again in 4 or 5 days. Leaving a live mouse/rat in with a snake, unsupervised is a big risk to the snake.

(However, I fully endorse feeding live simply cuz my snakes will ignore anything that doesn't move.)

Thanks for the reply...and yeah I took the mouse out before I went to bed. I use to keep mice as pets a few years ago, so I'm pretty sure I can keep the little guy alive for a while

My snake wil only eat if he knows im not looking so he feels more secure so i put a cover over the front and the top and drop the live mouse in with in the first few seconds the mouse is generaly taken care of and my snake is full.
you might want to try this i still peak in and make sure everything is goin alright i just think he feels safer when i put the cover around him.

Go with what works for awhile,(mice) then if you really feel like changing him over to rats or f/t at least he's already use to his surroundings. Either they go for it or they don't, I have all rat feeders except one. 12 bp's one mouser

Hey at least the little guy will have a decent life before he dies.... Even though ever since I threw him in with "Buddy" that mouse has been shaking and will not let me get near him. He knows his time left on Earth is short-he knows hes food! I am not letting myself get attached to Buddy's food. The first mouse I gave him was super cute and friendly...so I gave him that one first so I wouldn't fall in love, haha!
