    waterfall for cresties?

I am thinking of adding a waterfall to my crested gecko cages. I was thinking this would help keep the humidity up higher like they need and provide a fresher water sorce. Would this help or just be pointless? I'm going today to get one in a few hours so any help.

    Re: waterfall for cresties?

I bought one and it turned out to be more of a pain than anything. I would find the remains of crickets, the crestie poop was really hard to clean, not to mention you have to plug it in...

I bought one with one of those little fog makers...it looked cool the night I put it in, but the next morning, all the water was gone and the little fog maker was broken because it ran without water...we're talking a span of about 8 hours.

Guess you didn't buy any stock in it then?

I have a exto terra terrarium that is 18x18x18 for them right now and they come with the areas so that u can plug in stuff or air tubing through the back so im not worried about plugging it in. I just wnat something to help the humidity without having to spray all the time.

they look nice but they are a pain to clean. they also have gaps and grooves where a smaller gecko could possibly get inside of the unit and into where the motor and whatnot is. i find it too risky and too much of an annoyance (i used one for some frogs for a while).

I had one of those exo terra 18s for my BP. What I did to raise the humidity was very simple. First I bought a sheet of 1/8 in. plastic to cover the top screen, and cut a 3. in dia. hole in the top for my heat lamp. then I fed an air hose through the back with a 10 gal whisper quiet pump on one end and a small air stone on the other. I put the stone in a bowl of water. It bubbled and splashed all the time. All I had to do was put water in the bowl occasionally. It was a great expedient, until I bought a tub setup.

    Re: waterfall for cresties?

We had investigated the same thing before Adam's lizard passed away a couple years ago. We found from all feedback, information, and reviews of the available products that if you're going to go the route of a fountain it is best to pick up some supplies and make your own. That way, you have complete control over size, level of maintenance, and if something ever does break then you know how to fix it. Plus, there are always ways to safety proof your own...

I believe I can find you a link somewhere to someone who's posted equipment and how they made one... But it's on another forum so just PM if you'd like to see an example. When we did ours, we never had a problem with it other than crickets drowning themselves, but they did that in the waterbowl we had anyway, so it made little difference.

    Re: waterfall for cresties?

I mentioned to a friend I was going to get one of the waterfalls and they had an extra so they gave it to me to try out and so far its working to raise the humidity. I have a ton of hanging plants and vines and such and the little one is loving it so far. Caught it on the waterfall already licking the water lol. Ill give it a few days before I make the final decision but so far so good.
