    Red face Lost corn!

I have (someone had to get rid of) a very young opal corn (12 inches long, about the diameter of a pencil )that got out of the enclosure about three weeks ago. I have checked closets, dressers, baseboards, desk drawers, shoes, and along the base boards. I fear he has gotten under the house. I have read several sources with recommendations about retrieving him, but so far nothing has worked (pinkie in a coffee can with a hole in the lid, heating pad under a dresser, running a dead mouse along the base board and looking along that area late nights, etc. Any suggestions?

    Re: Lost corn!

I lost my corn ..he went under the floor in the room he was in..I put his water dish there because they will look for water..i also put a heat pad covered with a box top like a hide in the room. Remember they are nocturnal so he will probably venture out while your sleeping..we found ours at about 1 am leaving the hide and going back under the floor...little stinker had been coming out all along because the water was dirty with fuzz every few days ..Ive also heard of using a plastic bottle with a mouse in it.. where the opening is big enough for him to get in but when he eats the mouse hes too fat to leave..not sure what kind with a little guy like yours ..maybe others have better suggestions
    Hope you find him

    Re: Lost corn!

I too have a lost corn and have tried all the suggestions in the Love book and on forums, except the flour on the floor trick that doesn't work very well on carpet.

A friend who owns a pet store had a baby ball python escape and a year later the escapee turned up in a box in the storage room of the store. I've read many forum stories of escapees that turned up months after they escaped. So unless I find the escapee dead, I continue to hope he's alive and will turn up someday...and I leave small dishes of water around behind things so he can find water.

I did try the mouse in the 5 gallon bucket trick and the mouse disappeared mysteriously and the only possible way it could have disappeared was if the escapee sneaked in there and got the mouse and sneaked out again.

I've tried the pcv pipe technique, left toothpicks strategically placed to see if they would be moved, tried the pop bottle tricks, tried strips of duct tape laid along the walls, tried leaving small hide boxes around...the only other thing besides flour I haven't tried yet is using the glue traps for rats, because I haven't yet gotten desperate enough to try that. I'm reluctant because of reading about the difficulty of getting a caught snake off the trap without doing bodily harm to the snake.

I hope your escapee comes back safe and sound, just like I keep hoping my escapee (and my garter escapee too) will turn up in good shape. As many things as I've read about escapes, I'm beginning to wonder if most snake keepers have a loose snake in the house!

I also keep trying to figure out how to make something absolutely escape proof. My corn boy got out of a plastic container with a lock down lid that was also reinforced with ample duct tape and weighted on the top with heavy books!

Any suggestions of what kind of container is completely escape proof, if there is such a thing, would be appreciated!
