    To the Breeders

I know that other animal breeders are very worried about what will happen to the animals they bred after they sell them and make sure to ask a million questions and interagate the buyer before allowing them to have there animal. Do BP Breeders do the same?

I like to know that the people I sell to know what they are doing. Ill give them a caresheet with the snake. Maybe ask a few questions but not to bad. The pet shop I sell to, they are really picky if the person doesnt seam to know what they are talking about. They wont sell to them. Its always nice to know where your babies are going and that they will be well taken care of. I think its ok to ask the person questions about how they will care for the snake and all that. Just dont over do it and make them feel stupid.

    Re: To the Breeders

I won't sell to someone if I feel they are either 1.) likely to broker the animal; 2.) have asked NO questions concerning the animal in question and are not open to dialogue; or if I just get a bad vibe and something doesn't seem quite right. I've had a few inquiries that were just plain weird. Then again, I am a nazi about where my kids are going. I want the best for them. Luckily, I don't depend on breeding for my livelihood so I can be picky...

I think a good breeder (and a good buyer) should always be open to dialogue, even long after the sale is over. I'm always available to answer questions or help problem solve, even years after the sale.I have bought from other breeders that didn't seem to give a crap who or what you were as long as the money showed up. That may be one of the least appealing aspects of the BP community.

To each his own, I suppose.

    Cheers,
    Kat

    Re: To the Breeders

Not that i have sold alot but i am in the process of trying to open a pet store, and i have talked people who i felt could not financially give the care to the snake to wait. Also give the most detailed care instructions as i can possibly give, and will try to find the answer for them. Such as the proper care for a hedgehog. I feel that i am responsible for giving any animal that i take in or sell the best life in captivity as possible and to me that means if they have an issue i am there to give them the answers they want and do what i can. For example talking the owner of one snake i sold thru his first shed, that is about a week long process at 2 phone calls a day it adds up but i know thats what needed to be done, and when it had a retained eye cap i was there to tell him how he needed to mist sooner and do this and that to solve that issue so it didn't happen again and then take the time outta my day to remove the retained shed and eye cap.
I am not completely picky and over board like some but a snakes health is first priority in my book.

    Re: To the Breeders

I am not a huge breeder by any sense of the word; I only had two clutches last year. But in selling, I definately like to know who I am selling them to. Selling through an online forum, where you know people are can vouch for their reputation, is great.
I sold/traded some of mine to a local pet store in Cheektowaga. My husband and I built a rapport with the owners of the shop, a neat couple that are not only into herps, but not far away. Yes, it is a pet store, and yes, they are reselling the babies. But they know how to care for them properly and do not just give away animals to anyone with a pulse. Having a store, they have access to more customers than my husband and I do, so it is a good situation, as we got a nice snake in a partial trade that they were also looking for a home for. Many people work out deals with pet stores. I think that this is good if you can find a shop that educates people and knows how to care for their animals. My best advice is, trust your gut feelings with people, and go from there.

    Re: To the Breeders

I pretty much pick and choose who i sell to...I also dont sell alot of inexpensive animals so that definitly helps my peace of mind knowing as a general rule that whoever is buying from me is another breeder or someone getting into breeding...All the "pet" quality animals (normals) usually ill Wholesale off to a friend for his petstore where i also know they will get top notch care
