    What is the Difference?

What is the major difference between Pastels and super pastels? I've been looking at pictures of pastels and supers and sometimes a snake will be advertised as a super and it looks just like a regular pastel. So say I'm breeding two pastels together and get some pastel offspring. How would I know which ones were supers?

Super Pastels are the "Super" form of a Pastel.

Pastel x Pastel = Super Pastel

The super pastel would have lots of blushing, and almost have a lavender color to it.

    Hope that helps

    Re: What is the Difference?

Oh I know the genetics behind the super but I'm wondering about visual differences. Some supers look like 'normal' pastels, though they are advertised as supers. Is there any way (besides breeding them) to tell if they are supers (since super pastels ALWAYS produce pastels)

I took this picture from Greg Graziani's web site

The two BPs on the bottom with the light yellow and high blushing those are the supers....while the one on the side that is darker yellow/orange is the reg pastel.

(I have never taken a picture from some one's page before without permission..I figured with posting ownership I would be fine...please PM me if I was wrong)

    Re: What is the Difference?

I hear what your saying... in a clutch, how do you determine the pastels from the supers. I guess it falls under the "quality" .... I've seen really nice pastels that look better than some "supers". It would be nice if maybe the super sellers posted the super next to a pastel sib??? But like you said, they might just haft to be proven...

    Great thought to ponder!

    Re: What is the Difference?

There are alot of Super Pastels out there these days that look very similar to Pastels. In my opinion, many people are not selectively breeding Pastels for good looking Supers like they did 4 to 5 years ago. Alot of the Supers that I see lately are probably by products (no negative connotation implied) from people breeding for other morphs. i.e. Breeding a BumbleBee to a Pastel in hopes of a KillerBee, or other breeding of the sort.

After saying all of that, one of the biggest indicators is the coloring on the head. I have rarely seen a Super that did not have a very washed out head color. I think that the only time it may be hard to determine the phenotype of the animal would be if you had a very small clutch, or bad odds, and did not hatch at least one Pastel and one Super in the clutch. Comparison of the babies will be the easiest way to determine what the animal is. If you look at enough animals, you will find Supers that look like Pastels, and Pastels that look like Supers. All of this boils down to what everyone speaks about when picking out Pastels. Pick the best looking breeding stock you can, and then look at the price tag, not the other way around. If you buy cheap, then you will probably produce cheap offspring.

I hope that didn't coinfuse anyone too bad, but if it did, give me a chance to clarify.
