tank size for baby bp
i was talking to the guy at the petstore about maybe getting a baby bp.he said that the babies need to start in a 10 gallon tank.i was wondering if he is right because i was going to just by a 30 or 40 gallon tank instead of going gradulally to a bigger tank. thanks

Re: tank size for baby bp
babies feel more secure in smaller tanks but I started mine in 20 I just kept it real busy and he seemed to do fine. I would think 30-40g would be rather large for a baby though

Re: tank size for baby bp
Yeah a 30 or 40 is way to big for a baby. They like to feel enclosed and to much room can actually create stress, which can stop them from feeding and lots of other issues. Most of mine were started in 20 gallons. Like NOEK said i also kept mine busy with decarated branches so he could hide and in those he also had is to normal hides, one on the warm end and one on the cool. Just make sure the hides are not to big, they like to feel safe so tighter is better. This is how most of mine started and all did great! If you do plan to get one make sure you get the enclosure all set up a couple days ahead of time so you can get the temps right before you bring your new ball home. There is a good thread in one of the forms that shows a great way to set up a new enclosure.

Re: tank size for baby bp
ok ill probably start small then.well i was at the pet store today and i think i got some more bad info.the guy told me that i dont need to put repticarpet between the uth and the coconut bark.he also said the babies eat full grown mice and i asked him if a uth and a blue bulb for the hotter side and a rheostat that it would get to hot?the hides i was looking at was the small 3 in 1 zoo med hide.i dont know if that will be too big.ill try to find that post.also will my beardie being in the same room bother the snake if i cover 3 sides with a backround and face it away?thanks

This might help you, this is a complete list of the necessary supply you will need for your BP http://www.geocities.com/gaballpythons/
Some pet stores will sell you about anything, including what you don't need

Re: tank size for baby bp
When i got my snake she was no bigger then 14 or so inches and i put her right into a 55 gallon tank. I have a lot of stuff in the tank( several climbing logs, multiple hides, lots of vegetation and so on..
They say that if you put more stuff in the tank it will make the space seem smaller and make the snake more comfortable if they start to get stressed by the tank size
But never had a problem with her going off feed other then when she got sick. A lot of people say this is not a good thing but i got the tank for free so really couldn't beat the price and i figured it was something she would definitely grow into. And she is doing just that!

Re: tank size for baby bp
First off when people say thats "way too big" they're just saying what works for them its not a rule or something you HAVE to abide by or else your snake will die... To them its "way too big" but to me it can work just fine... I started my first BP off in a 40gal and never had any problems... Its really not [I]that[I] big once you add in two hides a decent sized water bowl and something to climb on(if you wish to provide your snake with that)... The hardest part with a 40gal is the glass and keeping humidity/heat inside... It can be done its just a pain in the arse especially if you live in the north where humidity is crap during the winter... If your getting a baby I say save yourself the 100$ your gonna spend on a 40 gal and just get a 66qt plastic tub... youll never have to worry about not enough humidity and the heat situation can always be tweaked to get where you need to be.

Re: tank size for baby bp
Here's something to think about. You can go buy a 40 gallon tank, look for one that is short. More floor space than height. And section it off. Like perhaps 1/3 of the tank.
Most breeders keep the babies in a 6 quart tub. We have our little girl in a 12 qt.

ok well i order the uth and other stuff for a ten gallon last night so i will start with that then i will probably go to a 40 gallon when it grows out of the ten and just put a bunch of stuff in it to make it smaller.thanks

Re: tank size for baby bp
is it a screen top tank? if so i don't recommend these, even though i started with them. a 10 gallon will work for maybe 3 months. but seriously, i think an ap or vision would be better. just my opinion.
