Habitat for Herps
Hello my name is James. My friends and I our trying to start a international group called Habitats For Herps. Each year we try to make suitable habitats for herps. For example we make small clearings in woods, just big enough to let basking light in for snakes and lizards. We also prop larger rocks on smaller ones to make places for herps to hide. I was wandering if anyone had any suggestions on how to make our organization grow or improve. Or any ideas of other things the group can do. You can post here or email me at herpmajor@hotmail.com. Thanks

i like where you are going with this but maybe not just adjusting the environment but maybe helping shelters find homes for reptiles and amphibians or any animal for that matter.

Re: Habitat for Herps
I don't know that human influence on uninhabited acres of land is really going to help the herps anymore than leaving it be would. They've been doing fine without us.
I agree, if you want to help with their enviroment, conservation and awareness is probably a better way to go.

I agree. I think that your idea is really awesome, and the fact the you want to help is even ??awesomer?? haha. But they're right, you should contact some local shelters and help that way, like connie said, they are doing fine without us. but keep that spirit, its people like you that help the herps become more than just wild creatures.

Re: Habitat for Herps
I am not talking about changing environments like that. I am talking about repearing ones that have been damaged. Or completly destroyed. The projects I have been talking about doing are being done by many some proffesional herpetologist as we speak. Infact I read about some of them doing these things in Reptiles Magazine. I am trying to start an orginization to do these things that many leading scientist are already doing so that it will be more organized and cover a larger area. Not to mention allow non-proffesionals to help in the cause with a little help from proffesionals. I am sorry if I wasn't clear in my first post. I hope this clears things up. I also think helping pet snakes is great, but I am more interested in helping them survive in the wild. So that future generations can injoy them. Not to mention that there are hundreds of speices of snakes that need help that are not involved in the pet trade. If anyone wants more info on what kind of things they can do or that we are doing to help repear destroyed ecosytems email me at herpmajor@hotmail.com.
Or reply here. Again sorry for any confussion, and thanks for your responses.

Re: Habitat for Herps
I think it's wonderful that you are looking to also help our native snakes. In some areas they are not doing "just fine without us", they are doing just fine despite us, or not fine at all. Part of your projects could be doing small snake shows, helping people understand about captive snakes but also about how our wild snakes help control rodent populations and fill a vital role in nature. You could also see if your community has a herp club and join it, some herp clubs offer free snake removal so that people do not just kill snakes that come too close. Volunteering at a reptile rescue is always a good thing and will help you get hands on experience with a wide variety of herps.
Best of luck with your various projects and your goals with this club. Excellent thing!
