feeding

my snakes eats very well but sometimes after the kill it takes him sometimes 10 minutes just to find the correct end to start swallowing. i watched him try to swallow a hopper sideways for ever, it was kinda funny and sad at the same time. i wanted to help him out somehow but i knew id probably get bit. so my ? is does anyone else experience this or is my snake just a little slow?

I have a few dim bulbs in my collection. I have one that seems to always eat her rat backwards and another that will only eat if she happens to bite the head but can't seem to figure out where the head is if she bites the rat anywhere else. I can put up with their quirks as long as they keep eating for me, though.

Yeah ive had that happen a few times. Sometimes she tries to start from its side, sometimes the head isnt angled quite right...but in the end she gets it. One time she was even moving the mouse around after she killed it.

I read somewhere that BP's tend to be extremely clumsy snakes. They strike and miss with some regularity or are one of the few snakes I hear about biting themselves during a strike. I watched my BP eat yesterday and he did something I never saw other BP's or snakes do: He grabs the mouse by the head, points it straight down and pushes it against the floor and into his mouth.

My other BP ate his mice . . .regular.

Thats how mine eats...

He'll grab it by the head and either use the floor, or the side of the wall of the feeding box I use to push the mouse.

Sometimes it just gets in a weird position and it takes them forever to get it lined up. I'm sure they can't see worth a crap because it looks just like a blind person feeling around.

My JCP took a rat up in his branches once. He actually coiled around the rat and the branch at the same time. As he was repositioning to get ready to eat, the rat slipped out and fell to the floor. Mind you, this was only about a 12" drop. Because he still had the branch inside his coils he was convinced that he still had a hold of it. He kept trying to get started but would have to pull back when he bumped his head against the wood. It took him like 20 minutes to finally realize it was right below him. I almost went insane. Then, to make matters worse, when the rat fell its head got tucked down to its chest so it was like a little ball. It took my guy another 20 minutes to finally find the head. It was all very excruciating to watch.
